August 19, 2014 "Color Inside the Lines"

After seven years of residing in San Francisco, I still refuse to accept the cloud cover in July and August. In my sparse free time, I have to make every attempt to travel 15 miles outside of the city by the bay in search of warmth, natural vitamin D, and the summer of my childhood abundant in sun-drenched days and sandal-worthy evenings.

The late summer months here are often the greyest- the air moist with ocean water and the sky enveloped by a lush blanket of fog gracefully funneling into the bay. A surrealist sight for many tourists and an infamous reality depicted in post cards, photographs and paintings, our summer is more a lack-thereof, albeit picturesque. My winter coats and equestrian boots step beyond the front door of my house, often for the first time in the year, and my daily dress code remains consistent with the Doppler 5000: dark with specks of metallic and the occasional burst of light.

Come the months of late September through December, and unlike the rest of the country riddled with ice storms and gusty winds, the gloom unwinds and disintegrates beyond the horizon leaving crisp sapphire skies, warm days and a long awaited Indian summer. Desperate to ditch the black (well, maybe just a few pieces at a time- it is timeless after all!), I’m un-conditionally lusting for the rich colors of autumn and eager to update my closet with saturated hues and bold color blocking. With a little help from the Pantone Universe and an ambitious craze for color this season on some of the most vogue runways, a crash course in dressing in color is no longer optional, but necessary. Below, I offer some of Fall & Winter's coolest pigments and pairings-black not included. In an effort to brighten your armoire, you may be surprised at just how fun coloring can be again--GD2PRGirl

JULY 15, 2014 "American Girl"

Tom Petty had it right long before my time; an infectious melody that illustrates a slice of classic Americana, and a near forty years later, still haunting every road-trip mix tape and feel-good shuffle on our MP3 devices. While I am always the first of my friends to board one international flight after the next and slink away in shameful embarrassment when I’m asked my nationality abroad, there is something comforting- something tremendous- about AMERICA that even I can’t deny.

When I dream aloud of distant travel lusts, my travel companion and partner-in-crime veraciously chimes in “I know you don’t feel the need to travel within America, but this country actually has some really cool things that you would probably love to explore.” To that, I usually sigh in agreement and involuntarily begin to cite all of the places I’ve seen in this country, and those I have yet to discover. Perhaps it’s due to our divergent government and its controversial politics, or any of the numerous stigmas in our media and domestic policies, but I couldn’t feel any less like an American Girl, nor would want to be one. On my recent travels, which took me to the West Indies in the Southern Caribbean, we befriended two Canadians on a day tour to the islands only rum distillery (an incredibly easy tour to make new friends on, might I add). As this conversation began to surface in our van, and I started to feel the anxiety of my nationality rise up inside of me like a toppling tsunami, our new friend to the north exclaimed “I like the US! I always support your decisions” sensing my un-ease, he continues   “ you know, when you're the best- a super power, a super country- others will always come after you, and you will always be scrutinized.” A remark not to go un-noticed, I spent the next 15 hour travel day back to my country reading a variety of publications and discovering my personal interpretation of this “Super America”.

We certainly have the most diverse culture, not to mention the staggering amounts of various cuisines- from south of the border taquerias in the Mission district of San Francisco to Per Se in New York City. When it comes to travel, the sheer terrain of this country is truly spectacular and unparalleled. To surf the currents at sunrise in Malibu and to ski the slopes of Mammoth that evening- we should only be so fortunate. Memories of family vacations and long weekends taken with friends to travel this vast country and bask in the young history of it’s sun-soaked desserts, troubled cities and endless coastlines are some of the best and most cherished that I have. I began to recognize not what this country is, but what it still has to offer. I hope to inspire you to travel America- by train, plane, automobile, or boat if you’re lucky- tune into the transcendent and industry-altering music we contributed to the rest of the globe, and just maybe find your inner American Girl.--GD2PRGirl

JUNE 24,2014   "A HIGH DEFINITION CLOSET"

The fashion industry is a peculiar, yet fascinating business. Just as we finish satisfying our closets with this seasons most lust-worthy frocks and perfectly adorned accessories, next season hits us in a hurricane of magazine publications and new episodes of Fashion Police on E! As the month of June vanishes into July and an impeccable summer of BBQ’s, tropical vacations and lazy afternoons are ripe with fruition, I find myself pondering the cooler, more orange-tinged Autumn. After all, the SEPTEMBER issue is only two months away and I have several save-the-dates for October weddings to be set amongst the turning leaves and fading grass; needless to say, fall is on my mind.

My DVR full of current obsessions, I can’t help but also anticipate the next season of my most beloved television shows, and more importantly, their divine fashions that seem to inspire the runways and conquer my closet. Television has come a long way from the days of Gilligan’s IslandDifferent Strokes, and I Dream of Jeannie – just to name a few- and it seems that it has simultaneously dragged the fashion design and costume trades along with it. Perhaps it’s why we look forward to the fall collection by Miuccia Prada while anticipating the next season of American Horror story. It’s no coincidence that I leap to my computer and Google-search the exquisite gown that Vanessa Ives modeled in the latest episode of Penny Dreadful. Below, my fall fashion inspirations from some of my most treasured programs (and perhaps even some inspiration for your DVR). Both fashion and television are always entertaining the next season, and might I suggest you do the same.-GD2PRGirl
